Elemér Duka & Gipsy Chamber Orchestra
The name Elemér Duka – cellist and ensemble leader – has become synonymous with a bold artistic vision that dares to redefine the meaning of classical chamber music. With his ensemble, the Gipsy Chamber Orchestra, he has created a sound world that is truly unique on the international scene: the cello, traditionally a background instrument, steps into the spotlight as the lead voice – even as “prímás” – while classical chamber music merges passionately with the spirit of Hungarian Gypsy traditions.
The ensemble’s instrumentation includes cimbalom, violin, double bass, and viola, providing a rich traditional foundation. Together, they perform works by Kodály, Bartók, Popper and Liszt in fresh yet respectful interpretations. The repertoire also features original compositions, film scores, and creatively reimagined global hits, all delivered with classical finesse.
The Gipsy Chamber Orchestra has performed to great acclaim at prestigious venues and festivals, including the Rome Chamber Music Festival, Split Summer Festival, and concerts organized by Liszt Institutes in Paris, Stuttgart, and Brussels. Their sold-out performances have consistently met with passionate audience response.
What sets this ensemble apart is not only its sound, but also Elemér Duka’s virtuosity, magnetic stage presence, and cultural vision – blending classical heritage and Gypsy soul into a single sweeping musical experience.
